The difference between steel rods and steel bars

These differences reflect the differences in material properties, manufacturing processes, application fields, etc. between prestressed steel rods and steel bars. Prestressed steel rods are mainly used in situations where high strength and special mechanical properties are required, such as in prestressed concrete structures, while steel bars are widely used in ordinary building structures.
Prestressed steel rods for concrete are not steel bars. There are several main differences between them:
Chemical composition: In the raw materials of steel rods for prestressed concrete, the contents of harmful impurities such as P and S are low, not more than 0.025 respectively; while the P and S contents of steel bars are not more than 0.045 respectively.
Manufacturing method: Steel rods for prestressed concrete are obtained by quenching and tempering low-alloy steel hot-rolled wire rods after cold working (or without cold working), and the steel bars are formed by hot rolling.
Mechanical properties: The tensile strength of steel rods used for prestressed concrete is not less than 1080Mpa, while the tensile strength standard of steel bars is lower.
Process performance: Spot welding joints of steel rods for prestressed concrete are not allowed.
Plasticity index: The post-break elongation and maximum force total elongation of steel rods for prestressed concrete are much smaller than those of hot-rolled steel bars.
Test requirements: Steel rods used for prestressed concrete must undergo a 1,000-hour relaxation test, while steel bars do not have such requirements.
